Lights, Camera, Connection: Australian Cinematographer visits Indonesian BRIDGE School

On the 6th of June 2024, students and educators at SMAN 5 Mataram in West Nusa Tenggara had the unique opportunity to host Australian cinematographer Rick Rifici and Australia's Consul General in Bali, Jo Stevens. This visit was part of the Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia (Australian Indonesian Cinema Festival), a celebration of cinematic collaboration and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The highlight of the event was the screening of Rick Rifici's acclaimed film, ‘Blueback’. The movie, which promotes sustainable fishing and marine conservation, resonated deeply with the students. They were eager to engage with Mr. Rifici, asking insightful questions about his inspiration for the film and the importance of its environmental message. Rifici shared his passion for the ocean and the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems, emphasizing how storytelling through film can inspire change and raise awareness about critical issues.

Australia's Consul General in Bali, Jo Stevens discussed her responsibilities as a Consul General and her commitment to fostering educational cooperation between Indonesia and Australia. Stevens highlighted her interest in promoting women's leadership in education, aligning with the broader goals of the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program.

The event was an educational and cultural exchange that underscored the shared values and goals of both nations. This event was in alignment with the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's (DFAT) focus on climate change and sustainability. It also supported the implementation of DFAT’s Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity Strategy 2024-2027, reinforcing the importance of inclusive and equitable educational opportunities.

The BRIDGE program continues to support these initiatives through its immersive and blended professional learning model, fostering strong partnerships between Australian and Indonesian schools. This program is instrumental in providing educators and students with opportunities to engage in meaningful exchanges, promoting mutual understanding and collaborative learning.
