Honouring Education Partnerships: Australia Governor-General visits Indonesian BRIDGE School

On Thursday, 16 May 2024, SMAN 54 Jakarta welcomed Australian Governor General David Hurley and his wife Linda Hurley for a landmark visit. Hosted by Principal Bapak Rustaman, the event was further distinguished by the presence of the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Penny Williams, along with Embassy staff and representatives from the Indonesian Education Ministry.

The visit was filled with engaging interactions and meaningful exchanges. Governor General Hurley and his delegation took the time to connect with students, engaging in discussions about their studies, aspirations, and daily lives. The students eagerly shared their experiences, showcasing the vibrant educational exchange and intercultural learning fostered by the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program.

The Governor General praised the students' enthusiasm and dedication to their education, emphasizing the significant impact of the Australia-Indonesia education partnership. He remarked, "Our education links are important for the young people for whom education is creating opportunity and, collectively, important for the relationship and friendship between our nations."

The visit included a tour of the school facilities, where the Governor General and his delegation observed classrooms, engaged with teachers, and witnessed the innovative teaching methods firsthand. The guests were particularly impressed by the school's emphasis on collaborative learning and cultural exchange, the core principles of the BRIDGE program. This occasion not only celebrated the successes of the past 16 years but also showcased the ongoing commitment to nurturing intercultural understanding and cooperation.

In addition to the educational insights, the visit was marked by cultural performances by the students, who showcased traditional Indonesian music and dance. These performances were a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia and the students' pride in their identity. The Governor General and his wife participated in some of the activities, further emphasizing the spirit of mutual respect and friendship that the BRIDGE program embodies.
