Unlocking Young Minds: Celebrating Literacy Day
Friday 8th September 2023, with the generous support of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, BRIDGE schools celebrated International Literacy Day with a vibrant storytelling event led by David O’Shea, an Australian author and teacher. The event, held at Perpustakaan Jakarta, took place in the cozy and inviting Australian Reading Corner, creating a perfect setting for young readers to immerse themselves in the joy of books.
Students from BRIDGE School, SDN Kebon Jeruk 10, along with other children from the local reading community, eagerly participated in the event. David O’Shea captivated the young audience with readings from his book, "Class of Nine," and the beloved Australian classic, "Possum Magic" by Mem Fox. His animated storytelling brought the characters and stories to life, fostering a love for reading among the children.
The celebration didn’t stop at storytelling. The event featured interactive pop quizzes and engaging discussions, keeping the literacy spirit alive and vibrant. The children enthusiastically answered questions about the stories, demonstrating their comprehension and enjoyment. These activities not only enhanced their understanding of the books but also encouraged them to express their thoughts and ideas, promoting critical thinking and creativity.
This event highlighted the importance of literacy in unlocking young minds and building a foundation for lifelong learning. By bringing together students and the local reading community, it fostered a shared love for books and reading while emphasizing the significance of international cooperation in promoting educational initiatives. It also served as a testament to the enduring partnership between Australia and Indonesia in education, showcasing how collaborative efforts can inspire young readers, cultivate a passion for learning, and demonstrate the transformative power of literacy and cultural exchange in nurturing young minds.
